Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government of rushing the Kpandai parliamentary rerun in a manner that threatens the integrity of Ghana’s democratic institutions. The Electoral Commission has scheduled a rerun in the Kpandai constituency for December 30, 2025, after a Tamale High Court annulled the election of NPP’s Matthew Nyindam and Parliament subsequently declared the seat vacant. Reacting to the development, Dr Bawumia described the pace of events as “an indecent haste” that departs from established democratic norms in Ghana. He noted that the situation…

The administration of United States President Donald Trump has demanded that the International Criminal Court (ICC) amend its founding Rome Statute to permanently shield him and his top officials from any future prosecution, warning that failure to comply will trigger fresh and tougher sanctions against the court. A senior Trump administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters that Washington has formally communicated three non-negotiable demands to ICC member states and the court itself: 1. Amend the Rome Statute to explicitly exclude jurisdiction over sitting or former U.S. presidents and senior officials. 2. Immediately drop arrest warrants issued against…
A private Ghanaian citizen, Noah E. Tetteh, has dragged the Attorney-General to the Supreme Court in a fresh constitutional challenge against the legality of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP). The suit, registered as J1/3/2026, directly questions Parliament’s power to create an independent prosecutorial body that operates outside the supervision and control of the Attorney-General. Deputy Attorney-General Dr Justice Srem-Sai confirmed the development in a post on social media on Wednesday, December 10, 2025. “I can confirm that a citizen – Noah E. Tetteh – has sued the Attorney-General in Supreme Court suit number J1/3/2026,” Dr Srem-Sai wrote. “Parliament…

The Commission also received official notification from the Clerk to Parliament on Monday, December 8, 2025, declaring the Kpandai parliamentary seat vacant. According to the EC, the rerun will involve only the three candidates who participated in the December 7, 2024, parliamentary election in the constituency.…
President John Dramani Mahama has described ongoing calls to abolish the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) as premature, insisting the institution remains a vital pillar in Ghana’s fight against corruption. Speaking during a courtesy call by the National Peace Council at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, President Mahama defended the OSP’s unique mandate, emphasising that it is the only anti-corruption agency with full prosecutorial independence. “I think it’s premature to call for the closure of that office,” he stated. “The unique thing about that office is that it is the only anti-corruption agency that has prosecutorial…

The notice was issued following a Tamale High Court ruling that ordered a re-run of the 2024 parliamentary election in the Kpandai constituency in the Northern Region. Addressing journalists in Parliament on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, Deputy Minority Leader and MP for Asokwa, Patricia Appiagyei, criticised the letter by the Clerk of Parliament, calling it “selective and cynical” and warning that it could establish a dangerous…
Former Majority Leader and Suame MP, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has criticised the decision by the Clerk to Parliament to independently write to the Electoral Commission declaring the Kpandai parliamentary seat vacant, describing the move as unprecedented and procedurally improper. Speaking on Joy FM’s morning show on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, the veteran lawmaker questioned the legitimacy of the letter signed by Clerk Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror and addressed to EC Chairperson Jean Mensa, which triggered processes for a possible by-election in the Northern Region constituency following a High Court-ordered re-run of the 2024 election. “It has never happened before that a Clerk…
