The Member of Parliament for Bekwai, Ralph Poku-Adusei, has donated 100 large umbrellas to traders affected by the ongoing reconstruction of the Bekwai Market.
In a post on Monday, October 19, Mr Poku-Adusei said the donation fulfilled a pledge he had made to the traders. The umbrellas are intended to provide shelter from the sun and rain while the market works continue.
The MP said traders welcomed his team despite heavy rain during the presentation. He described them as women who work from early morning to support their families and sustain the local economy.
“These are women who wake up at dawn to feed families, to educate children, to keep the Bekwai economy alive. How can we leave them at the mercy of the weather? We cannot,” he said.
Mr Poku-Adusei said he would continue to support the market women, whom he described as the backbone of Bekwai.
The donation follows concerns raised by traders affected by the market redevelopment. In September, the MP said he would engage municipal authorities on the traders’ circumstances, including their need for temporary shelter and safe trading spaces during construction.
