The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has disconnected the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) from the national grid over debts amounting to GH₵999.6 million and GH₵3.153 billion, respectively.
The disconnections form part of a nationwide revenue mobilisation exercise being conducted by ECG. The exercise, which began on May 16, 2025, is expected to run until June 27, 2025, and is targeting indebted residential, commercial, industrial, and government institutions, including Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.
The Ghana Water Company was issued an ultimatum to settle its debt or face an extended disconnection of power supply to its main pumping stations.
Following the disconnection of GWCL, ECG proceeded to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, which was also disconnected over an outstanding debt of GH₵3,153,484.98.
According to ECG, GBC’s disconnection stems from non-compliance with a structured payment plan that had previously been agreed upon.
ECG insists that the ongoing exercise is aimed at addressing the challenge of non-payment for distributed power — a problem that has plagued the power sector with growing debt. The company says the exercise will contribute significantly to improving fiscal stability in the sector
