The ECOWAS Community Court of Justice is set to deliver its ruling in the human rights case filed by suspended and later removed Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo against the Republic of Ghana.
A three-member panel of the court concluded hearing oral arguments from both parties on Friday, May 15, 2026, in Conakry, Guinea. Justice Torkornoo was represented by Nigerian Senior Advocate Femi Falana, while the Republic of Ghana was represented by Deputy Attorney General Dr Justice Srem-Sai.
The court is expected to communicate the judgment date to the parties through its registry.
Justice Torkornoo was suspended by President John Dramani Mahama on April 22, 2025, and subsequently removed from office on September 1, 2025. She filed the application at the ECOWAS Court on July 4, 2025, arguing that the processes leading to her suspension and removal violated her right to a fair hearing under Ghana’s 1992 Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
She is seeking several reliefs, including declarations that her suspension was unlawful, an order for her immediate reinstatement, and US$10 million in compensation for reputational damage.
