Egg sellers cautioned against overpricing

The National Vice President of the Poultry Farmers Association of Ghana, Dr. Boris Baidoo, has warned egg sellers and food vendors against exploiting consumers by maintaining high prices despite a sharp drop in poultry feed costs.

Speaking on Accra 100.5 FM’s morning show, Dr. Baidoo stated that the recent reduction in production costs, driven by government interventions under President John Dramani Mahama and Minister for Food and Agriculture Eric Opoku, must be reflected in retail prices.

“No vendor has any justification to sell one egg above GHS 3 or two eggs above GHS 5,” he declared.

He specifically directed fried-egg sellers and chop bar operators who boil and sell eggs to strictly adhere to the guideline of two eggs for GHS 5, describing the price as fair to consumers while still allowing reasonable profit margins for sellers and farmers.

Dr. Baidoo explained that with a standard crate containing 30 eggs and feed prices now significantly lower, poultry farmers are able to break even, pay workers, and make profit without the need to inflate egg prices.

He threw his full weight behind the National Chairman and the leadership of the Association in their efforts to stabilise egg prices nationwide.

The Vice President also commended President Mahama for the renewed focus on the poultry industry, noting that government support, coupled with stricter control on egg importation and better monitoring, is strengthening local production and making the sector more sustainable.

Dr. Baidoo urged all stakeholders in the egg value chain to cooperate to ensure affordable prices for Ghanaian consumers during the festive season and beyond.
