Black Stars midfielder Francis Abu has successfully undergone surgery following a horrific injury sustained during Ghana’s international friendly against Japan, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced.

Abu suffered fractures to two bones in the incident, which occurred during the match on Friday, November 14, 2025.

The operation was performed at Toyota Memorial Hospital in Japan, coordinated through the efforts of Black Stars head of medical Dr. Prince Pambo, colleagues from Abu’s club Toulouse FC, and the local surgical team.

The GFA confirmed that the acute phase of Abu’s rehabilitation has already begun.

In a statement, the association revealed that one physiotherapist will remain with the player to assist in intensive physiotherapy sessions during this critical period.

Furthermore, plans are in place for a senior member of the Black Stars technical team to accompany Abu back to his home base in France once he is discharged from the hospital.

The GFA expressed profound gratitude to all parties involved, emphasizing the unwavering support from the Black Stars management and technical team over the past few days.

The association pledged to continue relying on this collaboration to ensure Abu returns to full fitness.

“We are particularly grateful to the Black Stars management and the technical team for their support during these last few days and will continue to count on their support during the rehabilitation process,” the statement read.

Abu, a key figure in Ghana’s midfield, is expected to focus on a structured recovery program to facilitate his return to competitive football. The GFA remains committed to monitoring his progress closely.

Ghana lost 2-0 to Japan in the Kirin Challenge friendly fixture.

The Black Stars will face South Korea on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, to conclude their fixtures for the current international break.
