Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, has been denied bail by the Akropong Circuit Court after his arrest in connection with an alleged case of property destruction at Kitase.
The arrest occurred on Monday, March 16, 2026, when police executed a bench warrant issued by the court. Mr Blay was handed over to the Akropong Police Division following his apprehension.
The matter relates to allegations that Mr Blay ordered the demolition of a house under construction on a disputed parcel of land at Kitase in the Eastern Region. The complainant, the landowner, reported the incident to the police, leading to an invitation for Mr Blay to assist with investigations.
Reports indicate that Mr Blay allegedly failed to honour the police invitation, prompting the filing of charges. He was absent without explanation from a scheduled arraignment in April 2025, resulting in the issuance of the bench warrant.
But according to a Citinewsroom report, sources close to Mr Blay, however, maintain that he was unaware of the arrest warrant until it was executed. They explained that the dispute centres on land he purchased in 1994, which later became the subject of litigation.
According to the sources, Mr Blay did not instruct the demolition of any building. Instead, in January 2026, he directed the clearing of a bare piece of land to prevent it from becoming a breeding ground for dangerous animals, including reptiles.
The sources further stated that the complainant had previously obtained a favourable judgment from the High Court in Koforidua, but that ruling is currently under appeal. They claimed efforts to serve the complainant with appeal-related processes have been unsuccessful.
The sources insisted that apart from the ongoing appeal, Mr Blay had no knowledge of any other court proceedings or the warrant against him.
The Akropong Circuit Court denied his bail application following his appearance, remanding him into custody pending further proceedings.
