On the margins of the ongoing 70th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70) in New York, Ghana’s Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, held bilateral discussions with the Minister for Family of the Republic of Serbia.
The meeting provided an opportunity for the two Ministers to compare notes on the progress made by their respective countries in advancing gender equality, women’s empowerment, and the reproductive health and wellbeing of women. They also acknowledged the prevailing gender challenges and the urgent need for intensified efforts to address them.
During the interaction, Dr. Naa Momo Lartey highlighted the efforts being undertaken by the Government of Ghana under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama to ensure that the rights of women are not treated as an afterthought but are recognised as an integral part of national development and nation-building.
She also shared insights into Ghana’s family system and cultural values, noting how Ghanaian society continues to evolve in ways that increasingly place the rights and welfare of women and girls at the centre of national development.
The Minister presented copies of Ghana’s Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024, and the National Gender Policy Framework to her Serbian counterpart as part of efforts to share Ghana’s legislative and policy progress in advancing gender equality.
The two Ministers reaffirmed the long-standing relationship between Ghana and Serbia and expressed their commitment to strengthening collaboration and exchanging experiences in advancing gender equality, family welfare, and social protection policies.
The bilateral meeting forms part of Ghana’s active participation in CSW70, where the Minister continues to engage international partners and stakeholders to advance the global agenda on gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.
