Ghana begins diplomatic negotiations to takeover Nkrumah’s residence in Guinea

The Ghanaian government has commenced negotiations with the family of Guinea’s first President, Ahmed Sékou Touré, to acquire the residence where Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah resided and worked during his final years as Co-President of Guinea.

This initiative, directed by President John Dramani Mahama, seeks to safeguard the legacy of Ghana’s inaugural President by converting the property into a heritage site dedicated to historical preservation and tourism.

The development was revealed by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa in a Facebook post on Wednesday, January 21, 2026.

He explained that the Mahama administration plans to renovate and maintain the residence as a tribute to Dr. Nkrumah, while developing a holistic experience that chronicles his remarkable life and leadership from Ghana to Guinea.

According to Mr. Ablakwa, the proposal was officially presented to the Sékou Touré family on Saturday, when Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang headed a Ghanaian delegation to meet the family and inspect Dr. Nkrumah’s long-abandoned home in Guinea.

The delegation’s visit occurred shortly after the inauguration of Guinea’s President, Mamady Doumbouya.

“The Mahama Administration intends to renovate and preserve Nkrumah’s Guinea residence not only as an act of respect but also to preserve the Osagyefo’s legacy and create a full experience for tourists to follow Nkrumah’s outstanding life from Ghana to Guinea,” the post read in part.

Mr. Ablakwa further indicated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is actively negotiating the terms and conditions of the potential takeover, while consulting preservation experts to oversee the renovation and conservation efforts.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is negotiating the terms and conditions and engaging preservation experts for this important assignment. In the spirit of transparency and accountability, the Ghanaian public shall be fully apprised at every stage.”

He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to keeping the public informed at all stages, aligning with its principles of transparency and accountability.

Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President, relocated to Guinea following his ouster in 1966 and was designated Co-President by President Sékou Touré, representing a pivotal moment in Pan-African history.
