The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has confirmed that a microlight aircraft crashed in Tema on Monday, March 16, 2026, resulting in the deaths of both persons on board.
In an official press release issued on Monday, GCAA stated that the aircraft, bearing registration number 9G-ADV, was a microlight en route from Ho to Accra.
The aircraft, according to GCCA was expected to arrive in Accra around 1520 Zulu time (local time approximately 3:20 pm), but last radio contact was made at 1418 Zulu (about 2:18 pm local time).
“There were two persons on board,” the statement read, adding that the crash occurred in Tema.
Emergency services confirmed that both occupants perished in the incident, which saw the aircraft plunge into the Oninku Drive School Park in Tema Community One.
Initial eyewitness accounts and reports described a helicopter plummeting from the sky before crashing and bursting into flames near the school park, close to residential areas and the TMA Daycare.
Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service responded promptly to extinguish the blaze and secure the scene, while police assisted in recovering the remains.
No students or bystanders were reported injured, according to the Assemblyman for the Kwesi Plange Electoral Area, Mr Ahmed Abdullia.
The authority said further details would be provided in due course as investigations get underway.
The GCAA, as the regulatory body for civil aviation in Ghana, is expected to lead the probe into the cause of the crash in collaboration with relevant security and emergency agencies.
