Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has announced that Ghana’s economy has crossed the $100 billion mark for the first time, making it the eighth-largest economy in Africa.
Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review in Parliament on Thursday, July 23, Dr Forson attributed the development to what he described as “superior economic management”, including fiscal consolidation, tax reforms and coordinated monetary and fiscal policies.
“Our recovery is as a result of superior economic management,” he told lawmakers.
He said Ghana recorded a real GDP growth rate of 6% in 2025, which accelerated to 6.4% in the first half of 2026, while inflation declined from 23.8% in December 2024 to 5.3% by June 2026.
The Finance Minister also disclosed that per capita income increased from $2,527 in 2024 to $3,385 at the end of 2025, describing the figures as evidence of improved economic opportunities.
Dr Forson said government’s debt restructuring efforts had restored investor confidence, highlighting the successful issuance of a $2.7 billion cedi-denominated bond in April 2026 as a sign of renewed market access.
He added that Ghana’s foreign exchange position had improved, partly due to interventions by the Ghana Gold Board, which he said generated additional inflows of about $15 billion.
The Finance Minister maintained that the 2026 budget remains unchanged, with government focusing on strategic adjustments within existing allocations rather than seeking additional spending approval.
