The Government of Ghana has rolled out a comprehensive support package for citizens being evacuated from South Africa amid ongoing xenophobic attacks targeting African nationals.

In a public notice issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, authorities assured affected Ghanaians of measures to ensure their safe return and smooth reintegration into society.

The statement indicated that all returnees evacuated due to the attacks would receive various forms of assistance to help them resettle in Ghana.

According to the Ministry, beneficiaries will receive a “Welcome Home Financial Package” as immediate relief. They will also benefit from transportation assistance to their respective destinations across the country upon arrival.

Additionally, the government will provide a reintegration allowance to support returnees as they rebuild their lives. Recognising the trauma from the attacks, free psychosocial support services will be made available to those affected.

The evacuees will further be enrolled in a special database to link them with job opportunities and startup support programmes.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the intervention as part of the government’s unwavering commitment to protecting the welfare of Ghanaian citizens abroad, especially during times of crisis.

“We value and cherish all our citizens,” the statement emphasised.

Meanwhile, the first batch of 300 Ghanaians will be evacuated on a special chartered flight scheduled for Thursday, May 21, 2026.

The development comes after heightened safety concerns following reports of xenophobic incidents and anti-immigrant protests in parts of South Africa.0
