Greater Accra Minister retracts ‘punitive posting’ statement, apologises to Northerners

Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has issued an unreserved apology following widespread public backlash over comments that suggested postings to northern Ghana could be viewed as a form of punishment.

In a press statement released by the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC), the minister described her remarks  captured in a viral video  as a “genuine slip in communication” that did not reflect her true views or government policy on staff postings.

“My attention has been drawn to a widely circulated video in which I made remarks suggesting that postings to the northern part of our beloved country could be considered as a form of punishment,” Mrs. Ocloo said.

“I wish to state, without reservation, that the comments captured in the video were a genuine slip in communication and do not reflect my considered views.”

The minister explained that the comments were made while responding to a question about technocrats allegedly involved in issuing development permits without due process, who are reportedly reposted to nearby districts. In her response, she referenced postings to distant areas but admitted her choice of words created the wrong impression.

“Regrettably, my choice of words created the unintended impression that such postings were punitive,” she added.

Mrs. Ocloo extended a heartfelt apology to all Ghanaians, particularly residents of the northern regions.

“I sincerely acknowledge the concerns that this has generated and offer my unreserved apology to all Ghanaians, especially my brothers and sisters in the northern regions, for any misunderstanding, offence, or discomfort caused,” the statement read.

She reaffirmed her commitment to fairness and professionalism in public service, assuring that all postings and transfers would be conducted strictly according to established rules and regulations.

The minister urged the public to consider the matter resolved and pledged to continue serving the people of the Greater Accra Region with integrity and accountability.
