He’s my friend, it’s no news – Afenyo-Markin reacts to Ken Agyapong winning Effutu in NPP primaries

The Minority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has described his relationship with former Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong as one of deep friendship and family ties, dismissing any suggestions that he should distance himself following Agyapong’s strong performance in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries in his constituency.

In an interview on Channel One TV’s Point of View on Monday, February 16, 2026, Afenyo-Markin reacted to the results of the NPP flagbearer election held on January 31, 2026, where Kennedy Agyapong secured an overwhelming 644 votes in Effutu, far ahead of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s 79 votes (with other candidates like Bryan Acheampong receiving 32).

Afenyo-Markin emphasized that Agyapong’s success in Effutu came as no surprise, attributing it to the significant support and contributions Agyapong had made to the constituency over the years.

“He is my friend; it’s no news he winning in Winneba,” he state.

He recounted several instances of Agyapong’s generosity, including providing financial assistance on election day in 2012 when the NPP lacked funds for cleanup activities, and donating 22 brand new taxis and a tractor to the people of Winneba during their time in opposition after the 2012 elections.

The Effutu MP clarified that these were not free handouts but operated on a “work and pay” basis, and he personally repaid for them. He further revealed a personal gesture: when his own business faced difficulties, Kennedy Agyapong gave him a check for $5 million without any formal agreement, describing it as a risk taken out of trust.

Afenyo-Markin highlighted family connections, noting that his great-grandfather moved to Assin for a cocoa farm, and through family ties discovered shared relations with Agyapong. “We live together as a family,” he stated.

He also mentioned ongoing projects linked to Agyapong’s support, including an ICT facility under construction at Osu Wampei, named after him and conceived about five years ago. The Minority Leader noted that Kennedy Agyapong in 2018 guaranteed Suzuki vehicles for youth in the constituency on a work-and-pay model.

Addressing speculation or criticism about the results—where some claimed Agyapong received “100%” support in Effutu while others got “zero”—Afenyo-Markin urged people to move past such narratives.

“The man and I, we are more than a family,” he said, adding that he would not cut ties over political outcomes. “It’s not right.”
