The Presidency has issued a disclaimer, dismissing a widely circulated statement purporting to announce the resignation of Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, as a complete fabrication.
The fake document, which began trending on social media platforms on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, falsely claimed that President John Dramani Mahama had accepted Brogya Genfi’s resignation following a tragic stampede during the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium earlier in the day.
According to the forged letter, dated November 12, 2025, and purportedly issued by the Presidency Communications Office, the resignation was formally received at 6:00 p.m. and accepted immediately.
It cited the “unfortunate and tragic events” at the El-Wak Stadium as the basis for Brogya Genfi’s decision to step down, while acknowledging his service to the nation and wishing him well in future endeavours.
The statement, purportedly signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, was formatted with official Presidency letterhead, including the national emblem, lending it an air of authenticity that fooled many online users.
In a swift rebuttal, Jubilee House shared a copy of the fake statement on social media with a “fake” label splashed across it.
“Fake! Ignore,” the Presidency captioned the post.
The viral statement emerged hours after chaotic scenes at recruitment centres in Accra and Kumasi led to multiple casualties, drawing widespread condemnation and calls for accountability.
President Mahama, speaking at the launch of the Nkoko Nkitinkiti programme in the Ashanti Region, described the incidents as “deeply regrettable” and ordered a full investigation into the lapses.
He further directed a temporal suspension of the recruitment exercise to allow for urgent reforms.
Meanwhile, Brogya Genfi refuted claims of his resignation as Deputy Minister for Defence when The 1957News reached out to him regarding the viral statement.
Acting Minister for Defence, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, briefing Parliament on the incident earlier, announced that the GAF had instituted an internal board of enquiry to probe the causes of the incident.
Briefing Parliament on the incident, the Acting Minister confirmed that some six persons had died from the incident recorded at El-Wak. He added that five of the casualties are in critical condition and are in ICU at the 37 Military Hospital while 5 others are in fairly critical conditions.
