The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has announced the official rollout of Ghana’s new chip-embedded passport system, effective April 28, 2025. This transition replaces the current biometric passport system with a more secure, technologically advanced alternative.
In a statement released on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, the Ministry assured the public of a smooth transition process and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring efficiency and improved service delivery.
Currently, approximately 30,000 applications submitted under the old biometric system remain pending, with around 7,900 identified as incomplete. The Ministry clarified that applicants with incomplete submissions will not be required to pay additional fees to finalize their applications.
To assist in completing these applications, affected individuals are urged to visit the new passport portal at passport.mfa.gov.gh and follow the provided steps to complete their process.
The Ministry has issued the following directives:
Applicants who began their passport application using the old system must complete the process within 90 days.
Those with scheduled appointments on the old platform should attend their biometric capture at their assigned Passport Application Centres as planned.
Applicants who missed appointments on April 28 or 29, 2025, are encouraged to visit their respective Passport Application Centres to continue the process.
This upgrade to chip-embedded passports represents a significant milestone in improving the security and international recognition of Ghanaian travel documents, offering enhanced protection against identity theft and data breaches.
