The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a strong condemnation of what it describes as a disturbing pattern of politically motivated intimidation and harassment of its members by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.
The party alleges the misuse of state security institutions in a deliberate attempt to suppress dissent and erode democratic accountability in Ghana.
The statement comes in the wake of the arrest of former NPP Parliamentary Aspirant, Alfred Ababio Kumi, also known as Adenta Kumi, who, according to his lawyer, Clement Opoku Gyamfi, has been charged with the publication of false news by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) following a morning arrest. Alongside the ‘Rambo-style’ storming of the residence of Ashanti Regional Chairman, Chairman Wontumi, by National Security operatives.
According to the NPP, Adenta Kumi’s arrest was executed by six masked National Security operatives armed with AK-47 rifles, who stormed his premises.
The arrest, according to the party, is allegedly linked to a petition he submitted to the President regarding the Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo suspension probing Committee.
The petition is seeking the suspension of Justices Gabriel Pwamang, George Adibu-Asiedu, and Supreme Court Justice Yonny Kulendi. The justices were alleged of meeting Thaddeus Sory, legal counsel to petitioner Daniel Ofori, at Santoku Restaurant in Accra following a May 15 hearing.
The NPP condemned the arrest, asserting it avoids addressing the substance of the petition and instead seeks to silence dissenting voices through fear and force.
“Rather than addressing the content of the petition through due process, the government has resorted to intimidation and force in a clear attempt to silence dissent and obstruct justice,” the statement read.
The party also expressed deep concern over the recent invasion of the residence of Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, by armed state agents.
This, the NPP says, followed an invitation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on May 19, 2025. Chairman Wontumi had officially communicated his unavailability for the scheduled meeting on May 21 due to medical reasons, offering instead to present himself on May 26.
“Despite this communication, armed personnel stormed his residence, a clear example of political harassment and abuse of power,” the party stated.
The NPP describes these actions as part of a broader, dangerous campaign by the NDC government to weaken opposition forces and threaten Ghana’s democratic fabric.
The party is calling on all Ghanaians, civil society organizations, and defenders of democracy to rise and speak out against what it calls “political persecution orchestrated by the NDC government.”
