Ofori-Atta has hired top US lawyers to fight his extradition – Attorney General

Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has disclosed that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has engaged top-tier lawyers in the United States to contest his extradition to Ghana.

Speaking during the Government’s Accountability Series on Thursday, December 18, 2025, Dr Ayine revealed that Mr Ofori-Atta has hired experienced American lawyers to defend him against the extradition request.

“I just got to know yesterday that he has hired some of the top lawyers in the United States of America—very experienced lawyers—to defend him. I am not afraid at all,” he stated.

Dr Ayine explained that extradition proceedings will involve court battles in the US federal system, where the former minister can appeal decisions up to the US Supreme Court.

The Attorney General emphasised the principle of reciprocity in extradition, citing the case of social media influencer Abu Trica (Frederick Kumi), who was recently handled over in cooperation with US authorities.

“I would have been very happy to hand over Abu Trica, as I have done, and then get Ofori-Atta quickly in return,” he said.

He noted that Ghana and the US are bound by the 1931 extradition treaty, originally signed with Great Britain and renewed upon Ghana’s independence in 1957.

Dr Ayine assured that the government has taken all necessary steps to bring Mr Ofori-Atta and his alleged accomplice back to face trial, urging the former minister to return voluntarily.

“If I were him, this is his home—he should just join the next flight and come here. Under my watch, he will not be treated unfairly. He will go through due process and be prosecuted, just like any other person,” he added.

Mr Ofori-Atta faces multiple corruption-related charges alongside others, amid ongoing efforts by the Office of the Special Prosecutor to ensure accountability.
