The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with the murder of a Level 200 student of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, whose body was discovered at Hutchland Beach in Cape Coast.
The suspect, identified as Michael Mensah, was picked up on Monday, June 15, 2026, at about 7:15 p.m. by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team at the Pedu Lorry Station, following what police described as sustained intelligence-led operations.
Preliminary police investigations indicate that on June 11, 2026, at about 6:48 p.m., the suspect picked up the deceased at Ayensu Plaza within the university’s hostel enclave.
Investigators further allege that the suspect, who claims to be a teacher but also works as a driver, later transported the student to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen alive.
The arrest follows days after the victim’s body was found at the beach under circumstances currently under investigation.
According to police, a roommate of the deceased told investigators that Innocentia had earlier called to inform her she was going out to meet an acquaintance.
She reportedly left her room in casual clothing but did not return, raising alarm among friends and relatives.
The police say investigations are ongoing and have assured the public that further updates will be communicated as the case progresses.
