The Upper West Regional Police Command has arrested six suspects believed to be part of a motorbike theft syndicate and recovered 17 suspected stolen motorbikes during an intelligence-led operation in the Wa Municipality.
According to a press release issued by the Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service on July 23, 2026, the operation was triggered by a report made on July 11, 2026, by a victim whose black Luojia motorbike, with registration number M-21-UW 3512, was stolen after she parked it at the Ghana National Fire Service premises in Jirapa.
Police said the victim circulated details of the stolen motorbike among friends and law enforcement officers, leading to intelligence that resulted in the arrest of Nasiru Muftawu at Loho while he was allegedly in possession of the stolen motorbike.
During interrogation, police said the suspect admitted to stealing the motorbike and was taken into custody to assist with investigations.
Further intelligence-led operations led to the arrest of five additional suspects identified as Basit Muftawu, alias Posey, 19; Issahaku Maruf, alias Katel, 22; Mohammed Ali, alias Geewaa, 18; Rashid Kankan, 20; Mutala Rashad, 20; and Haruna Hamdan, alias DJ, 20. Police also recovered additional exhibits connected to the alleged offences.
The Police Command disclosed that sustained investigations subsequently led to the recovery of 16 more motorbikes stolen from UBIDS, Chakor and Glamon, bringing the total number of recovered motorbikes to 17.
The suspects have since been arraigned before the Wa Circuit Court and remanded into police custody. They are expected to reappear before the court on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.
Meanwhile, the Upper West Regional Police Command has appealed to members of the public who have lost their motorbikes to report to the Wa District Police Headquarters with valid ownership documents to facilitate the identification and retrieval of their motorbikes.
The Command further assured the public of its commitment to combating crime and dismantling criminal networks, while encouraging residents to continue providing timely and credible information to support policing efforts in the region.
