President John Dramani Mahama has been awarded an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Public Administration by Yonsei University, one of South Korea’s most prestigious institutions, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to national transformation, economic development, and fostering international academic and diplomatic ties.

The degree was formally conferred on Friday, March 13, 2026, during a special ceremony at the university’s campus in Seoul. The honour was presented by Yonsei University President Yoon Dog-sup and Kim Hyun-chul, Dean of the Graduate School.

In his acceptance speech, President Mahama expressed deep gratitude and dedicated the award to the people of Ghana, describing it as a recognition of the strong and mutual respect that exists between Ghana and South Korea.

“This honour you have bestowed upon me today is one that I accept on behalf of all the people of Ghana as a symbol of the deep respect and mutual relations and admiration that exists between our two countries,” he stated.

The former and current President of Ghana underscored the value of global cooperation, peace, and youth development, urging continued partnership between the two nations.

“May the friendship between Ghana and Korea continue to grow deeper and stronger. May we all commit ourselves to choosing peace over conflict, cooperation over confrontation, and hope over despair. May we always lead with truth and strive for excellence,” he added.

He also extended a special message to the youth, particularly students of Yonsei University: “And to all the young people in Korea, especially the students of Yonsei University.”

The conferment of the honorary doctorate underscores President Mahama’s long-standing legacy in public service, governance, and international diplomacy. It further strengthens the growing bilateral relations between Ghana and the Republic of Korea, particularly in the areas of education, economic collaboration, and knowledge exchange.

Yonsei University, founded in 1885, is one of South Korea’s leading private research universities and frequently ranks among the top institutions in Asia. The honorary award to President Mahama reflects the university’s recognition of leaders who have made significant impacts on their nations and the global community.
