President Mahama pledges timely completion of La General Hospital

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring the timely completion of the La General Hospital reconstruction project, assuring Ghanaians that every necessary step will be taken to deliver the modern facility for public use.

The President made the pledge during a working visit to the project site on Friday, April 24, 2026, where he inspected the progress of work and interacted with officials in charge of the redevelopment.

The visit is part of the government’s efforts to revive stalled infrastructure projects, especially in the health and road sectors, amid rising demand driven by rapid urbanisation in the Greater Accra Region.

Speaking to the media at the site, President Mahama emphasised the urgent need to complete the hospital to address the growing healthcare demands of residents in Accra and surrounding communities.

“Accra is a fast-growing city and the population demands quality healthcare, so we will do everything possible to complete this project so that we can afford quality healthcare for our people,” he said.

The reconstruction project, estimated at €50 million, aims to deliver a state-of-the-art healthcare facility equipped with advanced medical technology and increased bed capacity to serve thousands of patients annually.

Once completed, the hospital is expected to significantly reduce pressure on other health facilities in the capital while improving access to essential medical services for residents.

Authorities have indicated that the project is now back on track, with a revised completion target set for 2027.

This development comes after years of delays that led to the temporary closure of the original La General Hospital, leaving many residents without a nearby functional facility. The recommencement of work has been welcomed by locals, though some continue to express cautious optimism due to past setbacks.
