The National Sports Authority (NSA) has announced a lift on the suspension on professional boxing in Ghana  effective Thursday, November 6, 2025.

The announcement contained in a statement comes after months of consultations involving the NSA, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, and the Interim Management Committee (IMC) tasked with normalizing the discipline.

The NSA stated that the IMC has achieved significant progress in addressing the challenges that prompted the suspension, with a strong emphasis on enhanced medical and safety protocols as well as improved governance and administrative structures.

The Authority hailed the development as a major milestone in restoring Ghana’s proud boxing legacy and commended the IMC, athletes, and stakeholders for their cooperation during the reform period.

Under the new framework, published medical and safety manuals, codes, and regulations have been introduced, alongside the establishment of a functional Interim Medical Commission and a centralized medical database.

An approved insurance framework and a sustainable medical support system are also in place, complemented by certified ringside and medical staff.

The NSA expressed confidence that these measures will protect athletes while positioning Ghanaian boxing to attract investment and international collaborations.

The Authority urged local and foreign promoters to organize bouts in Ghana under the upgraded standards and announced plans for an upcoming education and stakeholder engagement campaign to roll out the new operational systems and foster partnerships for boxers’ welfare.

The suspension on professional boxing in Ghana was imposed on July 1, 2024, by the National Sports Authority (NSA) following a series of safety and governance concerns.

The decision came in the wake of the death of boxer Sherrif Keita during a bout in Accra on June 22, 2024, which exposed critical lapses in medical oversight, ringside safety, and regulatory compliance.

Subsequent incidents including inadequate medical response protocols and administrative irregularities, prompted the NSA to halt all professional boxing activities indefinitely until reforms were implemented.
