Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, will tonight join popular digital influencer Kalyjay on an X-Space to engage Ghanaians on the newly announced adjustments to data bundle pricing in Ghana, set to take effect from July 1, 2025.
This comes two days after the Minister addressed the media at the Ministry’s Complex in Accra, where he announced sweeping changes to data bundles across all three major telecommunications networks—MTN Ghana, AT Ghana, and Telecel Ghana.
The announcement followed extensive consultations with the CEOs of the respective telecom companies, with the aim of improving value for consumers while addressing challenges faced by the telecom sector.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Hon. Sam George expressed his readiness to take on questions from the public, writing: “Join me this evening at 7pm as we discuss and I take all questions you have.”
This X-Space, moderated by Kalyjay, is the second high-profile online engagement between a government official and a social media influencer under the Mahama administration.
The first, a youth budget engagement held earlierthis year, recorded over 60,000 listeners and was widely praised for making governance more accessible to the youth.
Citing report by MyJoyOnline, MTN Ghana—which holds Significant Market Power (SMP) status—will see a 15 percent increase in all existing data bundle prices. However, the popular GH₵399 bundle will be restored to offer 214 gigabytes of data, reversing the recent reduction to a GH₵350 bundle offering only 92.88 gigabytes. AT Ghana and Telecel Ghana will implement a 10 percent increase across all existing data bundles, but with notable value enhancements.
AirtelTigo’s GH₵400 bundle, for instance, will now offer 236 gigabytes instead of 190, while Telecel’s will rise from 90 to 250 gigabytes.
Hon. Sam George emphasized that although the new pricing comes at a cost to network operators, the ultimate goal is to deliver better value to the Ghanaian people.
He acknowledged the cooperation of the telecom CEOs and stated that the changes reflect months of productive dialogue. The July 1 implementation date will allow telecom operators the time to recalibrate their systems accordingly.
To ensure that the new directives are adhered to, the National Communications Authority (NCA) has been tasked with strict monitoring and enforcement.
The Minister also warned that sanctions would be applied to any operator that fails to comply with the new pricing and bundle structures.
The Minister also disclosed ongoing efforts to reduce the overall cost of data through tax rationalization. He noted that discussions are underway with the Minister of Finance to adjust certain tax components, with the hope of reducing the 39 percent tax build-up that contributes to high data costs.
