Save the Republic demands removal of security chiefs over narcotics seizures

Save the Republic Pressure Group has called for the removal of the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, and heads of key institutions responsible for narcotics control, border security, customs, maritime and aviation security over what it describes as Ghana’s growing role as a transit point for illicit drugs.

The group also wants the Chief Executive Officer of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) and other security chiefs removed, arguing that the repeated seizures of narcotics linked to Ghana demonstrate serious failures within the country’s security architecture.

Speaking at a press conference, the group’s Convener, private legal practitioner Kwesi Botchway Jnr, said the seizures were no longer isolated incidents but formed a pattern that required urgent national action.

“We refuse to accept a Ghana where billions of cedis worth of narcotics can pass through our borders, ports and supply chains, while Government’s answer is another meeting, another committee and another promise that investigations are ‘ongoing,’” he said.

He cited several major seizures, including the 3.3-tonne cocaine shipment intercepted at Pedu in June 2025, the approximately 320kg methamphetamine shipment traced to Ghana and seized in Australia in June 2026, and the nearly 3.9-tonne cocaine shipment intercepted by French customs in Dunkirk in September 2026.

The group is also demanding the naming and investigation of government officials allegedly implicated in the US$208 million methamphetamine shipment, as well as an independent parliamentary inquiry into Ghana’s alleged emergence as a transit point for international narcotics.

Mr Botchway said accountability must extend to institutions responsible for intelligence, screening, surveillance and inter-agency coordination, insisting that the repeated seizures demanded consequences at the leadership level.
