Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has criticized the government’s reset agenda, following what he calls the wrongful suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by President Mahama.
Speaking to the press during the #SaveTheJudiciary demonstration held in Accra on Monday, May 5, 2025, Afenyo-Markin emphasized that the judiciary is an independent arm of government and must be shielded from political interference.
He also condemned the recent appointment of seven additional judges to the Supreme Court, calling it a breach of due process and an affront to judicial independence. “You know the process of nominating judges to the Supreme Court is not what has been used. Normally the nominations come, the Judicial Council deliberates—it is not given a timeline, then they will make a recommendation to the President, who will now go through the Council of State, and eventually it gets to Parliament. So this reset is a negative reset,” he explained.
Afenyo-Markin reiterated his commitment to defending Ghana’s judiciary and safeguarding its role as an impartial institution. He called on the government to reconsider its reset approach and focus on core governance issues instead.
“This exercise is to protect this very institution. What is happening to Her Ladyship is repugnant to good conscience. This government is to focus its attention on governance and not to be attacking actors who are non-partisan,” he asserted.
