Toase Court strikes out Nyinahin Catholic SHS teacher-student assault case, directs parties to reconcile

The Toase District Court has struck out the assault case involving a teacher and a female student of Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School (SHS) in the Ashanti Region.

The case was on the back of a physical altercation on campus in which teacher Eric Afful was captured on video repeatedly striking the student before lifting and throwing her to the ground. The footage, which went viral on social media, sparked widespread public outrage and condemnation, leading to the teacher’s arrest.

When the matter came up before the court, the judge encouraged both parties and their families to resolve the issue amicably through reconciliation and an out-of-court settlement.

Following the court’s decision, Professor Elvis Binney, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), appealed to civil society organisations and the general public to refrain from making prejudicial comments about the teacher. He also urged individuals to desist from issuing threats against Mr Afful as efforts are underway to resolve the matter peacefully.
