The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has assured that the 2023 cohort of graduate teacher trainees have been fully captured for recruitment in the 2026 budget.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, the Minister expressed surprise at a protest by members of the group in Accra, stating that the government had already made adequate provisions for their employment.
“Don’t forget, education remains Ghana’s largest employer. The Director-General is here. I understand that some unemployed teachers are looking for us on the streets of Accra. To respond to them: Cabinet gave approval for us to recruit some six thousand one hundred (6,100) more teachers, and therefore that category of teachers who belong to the 2023 cohort are adequately captured,” he said.
“I will be surprised if it is the same group that is on the street. They rather should be looking for us and going back to offices for the purpose of audit and identification to be reinstated and paid,” he added.
The Minister emphasised the government’s commitment to quality and accessible education despite numerous challenges in the sector.
He revealed that, compared to the 2025 budget, allocation to the education sector has seen a 23% increase in the 2026 budget.
