Three persons have been arrested in the Volta Region for allegedly impersonating high-profile personalities, including Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to defraud members of the public on social media.
The suspects, Gideon Awudi, 25; Edem Soku, 33; and Judith Soku, 31, were picked up in the Dabala and Sogakope areas by the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team of the Ghana Police Service.
Authorities say the trio used fake social media accounts to pose as the Speaker, the IGP, and other prominent figures to carry out various fraudulent activities, including mobile money fraud, credit card fraud, airtime scams, and online sales fraud.
The arrests were the result of a sustained intelligence-led operation spanning Sogakope, Dzodze, and Penyi areas.
The suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
