The government has imposed a curfew on Nalerigu Township and its environs in the North East Region, effective Thursday, December 18, 2025, from 5:00 pm to 6:00 am daily.
The measure, announced by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, follows advice from the National Security Council and is enacted through an Executive Instrument.
In a statement issued on December 18, 2025, the Ministry urged chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth, and residents to exercise restraint amid ongoing challenges and to pursue non-violent means to maintain peace.
A total ban has been placed on carrying arms, ammunition, or any offensive weapons, with violators facing arrest and prosecution.
Additional restrictions include:
– No movement of motorbikes
– No wearing of smocks
– No selling of fuel in containers
– Unlawful assembly
The curfew and bans come amid reports of escalating tensions in the area, including recent arson attacks, prompting reinforced security deployments by the Inspector-General of Police.
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Tuesday presented a meditation report to President John Dramani Mahama. The report and its accompanying recommendations which have since been accepted by the government, affirmed Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II as the lawful Bawku Naba and paramount chief of the Kusaug Traditional Area, as affirmed by the Supreme Court and existing law, with no room for contesting his authority.
Key recommendations in the Rey include recalling rival claimant Alhaji Seidu Abagre (installed by the Mamprusi side) to Nalerigu for an alternative traditional role under the Nayiri (with state support) or allowing him to remain in Bawku as an ordinary citizen without chieftaincy claims; urging strict enforcement of the law to prevent challenges; promoting ongoing reconciliation between Kusasi and Mamprusi communities; and addressing socio-economic devastation through development initiatives.
