The Ashanti Region recorded a total of 132 fire incidents in January 2026, representing a notable decrease from the 187 cases reported during the same period in 2025.
Ashanti Regional Fire Command Public Relations Officer, DO III Peter Addai, disclosed this to Citi News on Monday, February 2.
While acknowledging that some high-profile fires this year caused significant damage to markets, shops, and other properties — raising public concern — he emphasised that the overall reduction in incidents points to improved fire prevention and response efforts by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the region.
“We have been able to reduce fire incidence by about 45 cases, which is really impressive,” DO III Addai stated. “The damage one fire can cause is serious, so the command’s success in reducing the number of incidents is significant.”
He explained that the drop in figures reflects proactive measures, including intensified public education, stricter enforcement of safety protocols, and quicker emergency responses.
The Regional Fire Command has, however, cautioned that there is no room for complacency.
Officials urged residents, market women, shop owners, and business operators to strictly adhere to fire safety regulations, regularly check electrical installations, avoid overloading circuits, and maintain clear access routes for emergency vehicles.
DO III Addai stressed that sustained public cooperation and vigilance remain essential to building on the downward trend and preventing future outbreaks across the region.
