The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has received over 600 applications for the vacant head coach position of the Black Stars, President Kurt Okraku has revealed.
Speaking after the dismissal of Otto Addo, Mr Okraku disclosed that the high number of applications demonstrates the global appeal and prestige of coaching the Ghana national team.
“There are thousands and millions of coaches working in the football space, not many get the chance to coach at the World Cup. Therefore, it is very normal. Maybe already we have about 600-800 applications. People want Ghana,” Okraku said.
The GFA President noted that the association is carefully reviewing the applications as it seeks to appoint the right candidate to lead the Black Stars into a new era, especially with the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the horizon.
According to him, the selection process is being fast-tracked, with plans to announce a new head coach within the next one to two weeks.
While acknowledging the large volume of applications, Okraku stressed that the focus remains on quality, experience, and alignment with the long-term vision for Ghana football.
He indicated that both local and foreign coaches are being considered, underscoring the FA’s commitment to a thorough and transparent recruitment process.
The incoming coach will be tasked with rebuilding confidence in the team and delivering results at the highest level.
The appointment comes at a critical time, as the Black Stars are preparing for international friendlies against Mexico and Wales in May. The new coach will have limited time to assess the squad, implement tactical ideas, and build team cohesion ahead of the World Cup qualifiers and the tournament itself.
Ghana has been drawn into a tough Group with Panama, Croatia, and England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, making the choice of the next coach even more crucial.
With high expectations from fans and stakeholders, the GFA is under pressure to deliver a swift yet strategic appointment that can steer the Black Stars back to competitiveness on the continental and global stage.
The association is expected to provide further updates on the coaching job as the shortlisting and interview processes intensify in the coming days.
The dismissal of Otto Addo comes on the back of a stint of poor performances including his failure to qualify Ghana to the 2025 AFCON despite leading the team to qualify for the upcoming World Cup.
His dismissal was finalized after Ghana lost 5-1 to Austria and 2-1 to Germany in the just ended international break.
