GHL demands apology from Rent Control boss

Ghana Hostels Limited (GHL) has demanded an immediate apology from Acting Rent Commissioner Fredrick Opoku over comments he made regarding rent charges at the Pentagon Hostel on the University of Ghana campus in Legon.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, management of GHL defended its pricing structure and said the Acting Rent Commissioner’s remarks were made without proper due diligence, creating a misleading impression about the hostel’s operations.

The company noted that although the Pentagon Hostel is an investment by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), day-to-day management, pricing, and tenancy arrangements are handled independently by Ghana Hostels Limited.

“While we respect the right of individuals and media platforms to express opinions on matters of public interest, it is equally important that such commentary is fair, factual, and balanced,” the statement said.

GHL provided a detailed breakdown of its charges, stating that a standard four-in-a-room at the old Pentagon Hostel costs GH¢7,392 per academic year per student, while rooms at the new Pentagon cost GH¢8,876 per academic year.

These figures translate to approximately GH¢821.33 and GH¢986.22 per month respectively, inclusive of water, electricity quota, and GH¢100 Junior Common Room (JCR) dues.

Management insisted that the rates remain competitive and comparatively lower than those charged by several private hostels around the University of Ghana enclave.

The company rejected claims that SSNIT is exploiting students, describing such impressions as “wholly inaccurate and without basis.”

GHL also clarified that there is no GH¢28,000 hostel fee in its standard pricing structure. It explained that a limited number of premium rooms with extra amenities such as air conditioning and queen-size beds are available as optional choices and make up less than five percent of total rooms.

According to the management, standard four-in-one rooms constitute more than 65 percent of the hostel’s rooms, while two-in-one rooms account for about 30 percent. All charges are for the full academic year and not per semester.
