Adwoa Safo announces return bid for Dome-Kwabenya NPP parliamentary seat

Former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament Sarah Adwoa Safo has announced her intention to contest the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary primaries in the constituency, reversing her earlier decision to pursue opportunities beyond the area.

In a statement dated Thursday, October 22, 2026, the former lawmaker said her decision followed extensive consultations with party leadership, executives and other stakeholders, as well as personal reflection on her commitment to the constituency.

She said she would formally present herself for consideration as the party’s parliamentary candidate when the NPP announces the timetable and guidelines for its parliamentary primaries.

“Dome-Kwabenya is home. It has always been home. My commitment to its people remains unwavering, and my resolve to serve remains steadfast,” she said.

Adwoa Safo explained that although she had previously indicated her intention to pursue opportunities outside the constituency, she had reconsidered and concluded that serving its residents in Parliament remained her preferred path.

She said her decision was informed by her enduring commitment to the people of Dome-Kwabenya and her belief that she still had more to contribute to the constituency’s development.

The former MP also highlighted her record during her 12 years of parliamentary service, arguing that she had worked with residents, party members, community leaders, religious leaders and other stakeholders to address developmental challenges.

She described Dome-Kwabenya as one of Ghana’s fastest-growing constituencies, with significant development opportunities as well as considerable challenges that required sustained attention.

Adwoa Safo further cited the NPP’s electoral performance in the constituency during her tenure, pointing to the party’s parliamentary election results in 2012, 2016 and 2020 as evidence of the collective efforts of party members and supporters.

According to her, the party secured 63,373 votes in the 2012 election, increased its tally to 65,488 in 2016 and recorded 75,041 votes in 2020.

She attributed these results to the dedication, hard work and unity of party members, supporters and constituents who shared the party’s vision for the area.

“These achievements are not mine alone. They reflect the dedication, sacrifice and commitment of every party member, supporter and constituent who believed in our shared vision for Dome-Kwabenya,” she said.

The former lawmaker called on party members, stakeholders and constituents to engage with her in an atmosphere of openness and mutual respect as they consider the constituency’s future and the leadership needed to advance its development.

Her announcement sets the stage for a potential return to the NPP’s parliamentary primary contest in Dome-Kwabenya after she lost the party’s 2024 parliamentary primary to Mike Oquaye Jnr.

At the January 27, 2024, primary, Oquaye Jnr secured 1,194 votes, while Adwoa Safo polled 328 and the third contender, Sheela Oppong Sakyi, received 186 votes.

The defeat ended her bid to represent the NPP in the 2024 general election after serving as the constituency’s MP for three consecutive parliamentary terms.
