The leader of the New Patriotic Party Members of Parliament supporting the flagbearer bid of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, has exonerated the former vice president from the actions of the party’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, alias Abronye.
Addressing the press in Parliament on Thursday, November 6, 2025, Mr Ampratwum-Sarpong emphasized that Abronye, despite his self-proclaimed support for Dr Bawumia, is not a core member of the former vice president’s campaign and that his pronouncements cannot be taken as representative of the candidate.
“It is troubling the way he is now going about his things, and when you take Dr Bawumia’s approach to politics—his humility and the way he advises those of us close to and working with him—it is just how you see him: no insults, just go about and preach what he is capable of and why he is the best candidate. Don’t insult or use unacceptable language. That is Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. Now the Abronye approach is the opposite. The only thing I can say is that Abronye is not part of the inner circle of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. He is a supporter by his engagements, but he is not part of the inner circle whose pronouncements can be deemed as representative of Dr Bawumia,” he stated.
He emphasized that Dr Bawumia has personally admonished Abronye to change his style of politics, which the MP described as quite unfortunate.
“Abronye’s issue is quite troubling, but it is not Dr Mahamudu Bawumia who has empowered him to do that, and I know on authority that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has spoken to Abronye. I know on authority that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has spoken to Abronye that the way he is going about certain issues has the potential to affect him, and I am talking on authority. But Abronye is independent; he cannot be tied down by Dr Mahamudu Bawumia if he wants to go on a certain tangent. Sometimes in politics, a person can elect to campaign for you by force even if you are opposed to it,” he stated.
He noted that while Dr Bawumia is concerned about Abronye’s approach, he is limited in his control over how the regional chairman conducts his politics.
He, however, expressed hope that the regional chairman will soon have a change of heart and realign his style to suit that of Dr Bawumia, whom he described as refined in his approach to politics.
Abronye has been cited by critics as engaging in vitriolic politics.
He recently took a leading member of the NPP, Dr Richard Anane, to the cleaners for allegedly peddling falsehoods about him.
Despite insisting that the party stalwart peddled false allegations about him, Abronye has been accused of going overboard in his reaction.
