Africa World Airlines (AWA), Ghana’s leading domestic and regional carrier, on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, marked a historic milestone by welcoming its 5 millionth passenger since commencing commercial operations in 2012.
The colourful ceremony, held at Terminal 2 of Kotoka International Airport, saw the airline surprise a frequent female flyer who became the symbolic 5 millionth passenger as she checked in for her flight.
The delighted customer, who flies with AWA at least once a week and sometimes twice, described the airline as “the best in the country” for its reliability and excellent service.
In appreciation of her loyalty, AWA presented her with an exclusive reward package that included five free return tickets to any destination on the AWA network (transferable) and a luxurious weekend stay for two at the Palms Hotel in Takoradi.
Speaking at the event, founder and Board Chairman Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of Asogli, commended the airline’s staff, partners and customers for the achievement, describing AWA as the longest-surviving airline in Ghana since the collapse of Ghana Airways.
He highlighted the airline’s successes, noting that it had grown from just two aircraft serving only the Accra-Kumasi route in 2012 to becoming the safest and most reliable airline in the country, now operating a fleet of eight modern Embraer jets to ten destinations across Ghana and West Africa.
The event was graced by the Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Abla Dzifa Gomashie; the Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, Dorcas Affo-Toffey; senior executives from partner organisations including Hainan Airlines, SSNIT, SAS Finance Group and the China-Africa Development Fund; as well as members of the aviation community.
AWA currently dominates Ghana’s domestic market with over 55% share and operates scheduled flights to Kumasi, Tamale, Takoradi, Wa, Lagos, Abuja, Monrovia, Freetown and Abidjan. The airline has won multiple “Domestic Airline of the Year” awards and was inducted into the CIMG Hall of Fame in 2019.
