The Ministry of the Interior, in collaboration with the Diaspora Affairs Office of the President, has announced a temporary suspension of the Ghanaian citizenship application process for members of the historical African diaspora.
In a joint statement issued on Sunday, February 1, 2026, the two institutions explained that the pause is part of ongoing efforts to streamline and improve the application system, making it more efficient, accessible, and user-friendly for prospective applicants.
The suspension will provide the necessary time to refine procedures and implement enhancements, ensuring a smoother and more seamless experience when the process resumes.
“The temporary suspension will allow for necessary refinements to ensure a smoother and more seamless experience when applications resume,” the statement read.
The Ministry of the Interior and the Diaspora Affairs Office reassured members of the global African family of Ghana’s unwavering commitment to welcoming them home under the “Beyond the Return” and related diaspora initiatives.
Revised timelines, updated guidelines, and further details on the resumption of applications will be communicated through official channels in due course.
Applicants and interested parties have been advised to refrain from submitting new applications or making payments during this suspension period.
This development comes amid growing interest from the historical diaspora in acquiring Ghanaian citizenship, following previous efforts to facilitate reconnection with the homeland through programmes like the Year of Return and Beyond the Return campaigns.
