A baby stolen from the Mamprobi Polyclinic in Accra has been safely recovered and reunited with the mother following a swift and coordinated police operation.

A female suspect is currently in custody at the Dansoman Police Station, assisting with ongoing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The baby was reportedly stolen from the Mamprobi Polyclinic on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, in the Ablekuma South constituency. Following a report lodged by the child’s relatives and hospital officials, the Ghana Police Service immediately launched a search operation.

The successful recovery of the infant was facilitated through collaboration involving the police, community members, the distressed family, the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South, Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, and the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey.

Addressing journalists at the Dansoman Police Station on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, Dr Lartey commended the police for their prompt response and thanked the whistleblower who provided crucial information leading to the baby’s recovery.

“We found the baby. We want to say thank you to the whistleblower and the police that they have been able to work to get the baby united with the mother. The police can attest that yes, that is the baby, the parents have confirmed and then the suspect is in police custody,” she stated.

The minister assured that both the baby and the mother would receive the necessary medical attention to ensure their safety and well-being. She confirmed that the infant and mother were taken back to the Mamprobi Polyclinic, where medical staff conducted an evaluation. Doctors have reported that the baby is currently receiving treatment and is under close monitoring.

Dr Lartey further disclosed that her ministry is working closely with the Ministry of Health and security agencies to strengthen safety protocols at the facility and prevent a recurrence of such incidents.

“The most important thing is that we are going to support the polyclinic to redeem its image and then we are also going to work with the Health Ministry to ensure that the systems and structures we have in place are secured enough for patients and health workers as well,” she added.

The minister also indicated that police presence would be maintained at the facility to forestall any potential reprisal attacks by community members on health workers or the polyclinic itself.

Investigations are ongoing to establish how the suspect gained access to the baby and to determine if others were involved in the crime.
