Foreign Affairs Ministry launch investigation into killing of Ghanaian student in Latvia

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has initiated immediate investigations into the reported killing of a Ghanaian student, Nana Adjei, in Latvia.

Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the development in a post on Wednesday, December 18, 2025.

“My attention has been drawn to a heart-wrenching video reporting the killing of a Ghanaian student by name Nana Adjei in Latvia,” the Minister stated.

He assured that the Ministry has commenced probes through relevant diplomatic channels and pledged to keep the public updated on developments.

“We shall provide the public with regular updates,” Mr Ablakwa added.

The Minister emphasised the government’s commitment to protecting Ghanaian citizens abroad.

“It is worth reminding that nobody harms a Ghanaian in any part of the world and gets away with it. For God and Country,” he declared.

The incident reportedly involves an 18-year-old Ghanaian student, identified as Nana Agyei Oduru Ahyia, who died under suspicious circumstances in June 2025 while studying Electrical Engineering at Riga Technical University.

Latvian authorities had described the death as a fall from the sixth floor of an apartment building, but the family has alleged foul play, citing a voice note in which the student claimed to have been poisoned.

The case had previously drawn calls for justice from the family, with the student’s remains repatriated to Ghana in July 2025 amid ongoing demands for a thorough probe.
