The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has provided a positive update on the condition of victims injured in the tragic stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium during a military recruitment exercise on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, which has claimed six lives so far.
Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Monday, November 17, 2025, Acting Director-General of Public Relations, Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, disclosed that three of the five victims who were initially in critical condition at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the 37 Military Hospital have stabilised and been transferred to regular wards.
“On the day of the incident, 29 injured persons were rushed to the hospital. Five of them were in the ICU. Happily, three have now stabilised and moved to other wards. The injured are doing well and receiving the very best care,” Captain Arhin stated.
She added that 16 victims remain on admission and are under close monitoring, while the rest have been treated and discharged to continue recovery at home.
“We currently have 16 people still admitted. Others have gone home and are receiving follow-up care. We continue to pray that no more lives are lost and we are giving every patient the best attention possible,” she said.
Captain Arhin further assured the public that all medical expenses for the victims are being treated at the 37 Military Hospital are being fully covered by the facility with support from the government.
“The 37 Military Hospital, with support from government, is bearing the full cost of treatment for everyone injured in the stampede,” she confirmed.
The stampede occurred when thousands of eager applicants surged towards the entrance of the El-Wak Sports Stadium, resulting in chaos, multiple injuries and the loss of six lives.
GAF suspended the screening exercise at El-Wak to allow for investigations into the incident but has since announced a resumption of the screening on Thursday, November 20, 2025, with the adoption of stringent measures to forestall any future occurrence.
