The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has donated GH¢100,000 to support the medical treatment of victims injured in a deadly stampede at El-Wak Sports Stadium during a Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, resulted in the deaths of six people and left over 28 others injured as thousands of applicants rushed the venue for screening and enlistment into GAF.
Speaker Bagbin, accompanied by the leadership of Parliament, visited the victims at the 37 Military Hospital on Thursday to commiserate with the injured and their families.
Speaking during the visit, the Speaker described the donation as a gesture to ease the financial burden on the victims and demonstrate Parliament’s solidarity with the affected families.
He expressed deep concern over the persistent challenges in public sector recruitment processes, calling for immediate reforms to ensure safer and more efficient exercises.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces has suspended the recruitment exercise at El-Wak pending a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the stampede.
The Acting Minister for Defence, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson briefing the House on the incident earlier, announced that GAF has instituted an internal board of enquiry to probe the causes of the incident.
