IGP deploys reinforcement, armoured cars to Nalerigu as irate residents embark on arson spree

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has deployed reinforcement teams and armoured vehicles to Nalerigu, the capital of the North East Region, following the burning of two houses by some irate youth and threats to torch more properties.

In a press release issued on Thursday, December 18, 2025, by the North East Regional Police Command, the Service said the deployment aims to restore calm, protect lives and property, and enforce the curfew imposed on Nalerigu and its environs.

The reinforcement teams will also support the regional command in intensifying security along highways to ensure the safety of commuters.

The statement, signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Robert A. Abiik Anmain, Head of the Public Affairs Unit, assured residents that investigations into the arson attacks are underway, with perpetrators to be arrested and prosecuted.

“The Command would like to assure the general public and the people of Nalerigu in particular that investigations into the attacks and burning of the houses are ongoing and persons involved will be arrested and brought to justice,” the release stated.

The unrest comes amid heightened tensions linked to the longstanding Bawku chieftaincy dispute, which has occasionally spilled over into neighbouring areas like Nalerigu, despite recent government endorsement of a mediation report aimed at resolving the conflict.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Tuesday presented a meditation report to President John Dramani Mahama. The report and its accompanying recommendations which have since been accepted by the government, affirmed Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II as the lawful Bawku Naba and paramount chief of the Kusaug Traditional Area, as affirmed by the Supreme Court and existing law, with no room for contesting his authority.

Key recommendations in the Rey include recalling rival claimant Alhaji Seidu Abagre (installed by the Mamprusi side) to Nalerigu for an alternative traditional role under the Nayiri (with state support) or allowing him to remain in Bawku as an ordinary citizen without chieftaincy claims; urging strict enforcement of the law to prevent challenges; promoting ongoing reconciliation between Kusasi and Mamprusi communities; and addressing socio-economic devastation through development initiatives.
