An officer of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has been arrested in connection with the interception of 2,600 rounds of live AK-47 ammunition hidden in two containers inside a Paga-bound bus, along with a tactical gear bag concealed beneath the driver’s seat that contained two bulletproof plates, a black helmet, and tactical long boots.
The suspect, Assistant Immigration Control Officer Grade 1 (AICO1) Ahmed Abdul Samad, a native of Nalerigu stationed at the Paga Sector Command, was apprehended by the Upper East Regional Police Command.
The arrest followed a routine highway operation on December 26, 2025, at the Kantanso–Asankare Police Barrier in the Ashanti Region, where police flagged down an OA Bus (registration GT 5771-18) travelling from Accra to Paga and uncovered the items during a thorough search.
The driver, Kwame Afram, and his mate, Godfred Essel, were immediately detained, while subsequent investigations traced the consignment to AICO1 Samad in Paga.
During interrogation, the immigration officer denied any criminal intent and provided what he described as a logistical explanation for the items.
