New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, has urged the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, to step down from his position amid alleged internal jostling within the party.
Speaking in an interview on UTV on December 15, 2025, Mr Agyapong said several party members are actively seeking to replace the Effutu MP in the role.
He advised Mr Afenyo-Markin, whom he described as financially independent, to voluntarily relinquish the position to those challenging him.
“He is well-to-do, so he should leave the position for those who are fighting him,” Mr Agyapong said.
He explained that much of the criticism against Mr Afenyo-Markin’s leadership stems from power struggles rather than genuine performance issues.
“Those criticising Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s leadership want positions… I have personally called him to tell him to step aside,” he added.
Mr Agyapong noted that some critics are advocating for the Minority Leader to come from regions like the Eastern or Ashanti Region.
While aware of the individuals eyeing the position, he declined to name them publicly.
“If it were in the olden days, I would have mentioned all those seeking his position’s names, but now I won’t. He can eat for the rest of his life, and it shouldn’t look like being an MP is the only way to survive,” he remarked.
Mr Afenyo-Markin has faced criticism over his leadership style from various quarters in recent times.
