The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is scheduled to start today, Monday, May 4, 2026, with over 620,000 candidates nationwide set to sit for the exam as authorities intensify efforts to prevent malpractice.
The nationwide examination, administered by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), is set to run until May 11. A total of 620,141 candidates from 20,395 schools are expected to participate.
The West African Examinations Council has reaffirmed its firm stance against examination malpractice, urging candidates to strictly adhere to the rules throughout the period.
“Candidates found engaging in any form of malpractice will face severe sanctions,” an official said, stressing that possession of prohibited materials, including mobile phones, will not be tolerated.
However, the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, stated that officials implicated in past malpractice cases will not take part in this year’s exams.
“All supervisors and invigilators under investigation for their alleged involvement in last year’s BECE have been barred from participating,” he said.
The council also warned against misconduct towards supervisors and invigilators, indicating that assault or disruption could lead to serious consequences.
