My political future lies with Dr Bawumia – Adwoa Safo

Former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has declared that her political future is tied to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) gears up for its flagbearership contest.

Speaking to party delegates and supporters, Adwoa Safo called for unity and strategic reflection within the NPP, stating emphatically, “It is time for Bawumia.”

She acknowledged that political ambition is legitimate for all members, saying, “I am a politician, and Honourable Kennedy Agyapong is also a politician. In the same way that Honourable Ken has his own opinions and ambitions, I also have my opinions, and I am pursuing my political career.”

Adwoa Safo described the NPP as a “broad church” with strong family ties at the grassroots level, but stressed that leadership choices should prioritise the party’s long-term interests over personal or emotional factors.

Dismissing suggestions that her endorsement of Dr Bawumia stems from animosity towards Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, she clarified, “I do not hate Honourable Kennedy Agyapong. We have two beautiful children together, one male and one female; therefore, I do not hate Honourable Kennedy Agyapong.”

However, she emphasised, “This is not a matter of family and friends in the NPP party.”

Reflecting on the party’s defeat in the 2024 elections, Adwoa Safo urged members to learn from past mistakes, noting that perceptions of prioritising “family and friends” in government contributed to the loss.

“We must learn lessons from our loss, which has rendered us in opposition,” she said. “While in government, we made that mistake, and it has cost us.”

Highlighting her own contributions, the former minister recounted her long service to the party, starting from contesting in 2007, serving 12 years as MP, and holding positions including Deputy Majority Leader, Minister for Procurement, and Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection.

“Have I not served?” she questioned.

While recognising Kennedy Agyapong’s contributions, Adwoa Safo expressed concerns about her prospects if he were to lead the party and become President.

“I have never said he is going to win this contest, but let us assume he wins and becomes President, and he comes across my CV,” she said.

“Looking at the work I have done and how I have served this nation and my party, for someone I have two children with to consider appointing me as a minister would seem impossible; hell will break loose in this country.”

“And the Kennedy Agyapong I know, with whom I have two children, would never do it. Therefore, my political career and future are at stake. My future lies with Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia,” she concluded.
