The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has commenced investigations into allegations of vote-buying and related corrupt practices during recent primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a public notice issued on Sunday, February 8, 2026, the OSP stated that it has begun probing the NPP’s presidential primaries held on January 31, 2026. The investigation focuses on allegations of vote-buying, vote-selling, and the sources of funding for these alleged corrupt acts.
The OSP also disclosed that on February 7, 2026, it initiated a real-time investigation into the NDC’s parliamentary primaries in the Ayawaso East constituency. The probe similarly targets claims of vote-buying, vote-selling, and the origins of funds used in the alleged corrupt activities.
A particularly serious dimension emerged from the Ayawaso East primaries. According to the OSP, one of the candidates, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, allegedly abetted thugs to physically attack an OSP officer who was serving an investigative directive on him in connection with vote-buying and vote-selling allegations.
Consequently, the OSP has opened a further investigation into the assault on its authorised officer while performing official duties, specifically in relation to Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed.
The OSP reminded the public that Ghanaian law strictly prohibits corrupt acts in relation to public elections. It emphasised that vote-buying, vote-selling, intimidation, threats of violence, and actual acts of violence during elections constitute serious offences.
The OSP encouraged anyone with relevant information to come forward through its official channels.
