OSP questions Baba Jamal over Ayawaso East vote-buying allegations

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has interrogated Mohammed Baba Jamal, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Ayawaso East, over allegations of vote-buying during the party’s parliamentary primary held on Saturday, February 7.

Sources at the OSP confirmed that Baba Jamal was invited to assist with investigations following formal complaints alleging inducement of delegates during the primary exercise.

The questioning, according to the sources, is part of preliminary investigative steps and does not constitute a finding of guilt or wrongdoing.

The allegations centre on claims that television sets, boiled eggs, and other items were distributed to influence voting outcomes in the primary, prompting concerns over possible violations of Ghana’s electoral laws and anti-corruption statutes.

Officials familiar with the matter indicated that Baba Jamal is being investigated in connection with alleged assault, obstruction of OSP officers, and corruption-related offences.

After several hours of interrogation, he was granted self-recognisance bail and allowed to leave. The OSP has not yet released a formal public statement outlining the precise details of the allegations or confirming whether any formal charges will be filed.

However, officials stressed that the investigation remains active and will proceed in full compliance with due process and the rule of law.

Baba Jamal has consistently denied any involvement in vote buying. He has previously maintained that his campaign activities were conducted lawfully and in line with the NDC’s internal regulations and broader electoral guidelines.
