People are losing hope – Domelevo urges AG to speed up corruption prosecutions

Former Auditor-General Daniel Domelevo has called on the Attorney-General (AG) to expedite the handling of corruption cases, warning that Ghanaians are rapidly losing confidence in the system.

In a recent interview, Mr. Domelevo emphasized the need for urgency, stating that the public perceives the process as “business as usual” with little expectation of meaningful action.

“Because people are losing hope. People are losing confidence. People think it’s going to be business as usual. Nothing is going to happen,” he said.

He criticized the current piecemeal approach to investigations and prosecutions, urging the AG’s office to demonstrate capacity by deploying multiple teams to work on cases simultaneously rather than allowing them to stall.

“So if it is possible, it should come out with different teams,” Mr. Domelevo suggested.

The former Auditor-General stressed that any prosecutions must be based on thorough investigations and audits, cautioning against hasty court actions without proper groundwork.

“Some of the issues, remember, I’ve said them and again, that they need to be audited,” he noted.

He warned against relying solely on existing reports without further verification, adding: “You can’t just pick what is in our report and go to court.”

Instead, Mr. Domelevo advocated for parallel processes, including concurrent audits and investigations, to show visible progress and restore public trust.

“So you should give it out for several audits to be happening concurrently, investigations done concurrently, so that we can start telling people that this is progress we have made,” he said.

“I think that will be good now.”
