The Nkawkaw Divisional Police Command has arrested three persons for allegedly stealing cartons of sardines from an overturned truck on the Accra-Kumasi highway.
The incident occurred at Kwahu Fodua when a fully loaded articulated truck with registration number AA 119C Y, travelling from Accra to Kumasi, veered off the road and overturned, spilling its cargo and blocking both lanes of the busy highway.
Preliminary police investigations suggest the driver lost control while attempting to avoid a pothole in the middle of the road. The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation.
The crash drew a large crowd of residents and passing motorists to the scene. While many assisted in efforts to tow the vehicle and clear the road, three individuals allegedly took advantage of the situation and began removing cartons of sardines from the spilled load.
The suspects were spotted by members of the public, apprehended on the spot, and handed over to the police.
The driver and his mate, who sustained injuries in the accident, are currently receiving treatment at the Holy Family Hospital in Nkawkaw.
The three suspects are in police custody assisting with investigations.
